This is a web page consisting of an overview and two illustrations of practice on the GeogSpace website, a resource for teachers. The illustrations focus on collecting, recording, representing and analysing information. Illustration 1 supports students in identifying the places they live in and belong to, and in describing the features of their own place. Illustration 2 is designed to help students build on the concept of 'place' they were introduced to in Year F.

  • This resource focuses on teaching approaches related to investigating the places in which Foundation students live and approaches relating to skills of sketching of photographs and field observations.
  • Illustration 1: Investigating places in which we live - Year F uses digital maps and aerial photographs downloaded from the internet to help students recognise and name places they know as seen in map form. Illustration 2: Field and photo sketching - Years 1-4 develops the skills of field and photo sketching.
  • The resource relates to the Foundation to Year 4 level achievement standards of recognising how places are represented on maps, representing and interpreting geographical data, presenting findings in a range of communication forms and framing an inquiry.
  • The resource supports the general capabilities of Literacy, Numeracy, Creative and critical thinking, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
